Hello! I assist BIPOC LGBTQ+ adults (18-40) to overcome anxiety, depression, shame, body image, grief, and trauma, among other challenges. While using various therapeutic techniques, I especially draw from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to meet your unique needs and goals. Together, we will explore how your past, present, and social environment impact your mental health. I have extensive experience working with BIPOC folx, those with intersectional identities, people from diverse sexual and gender experiences, sex workers, kink/fetish, BDSM, and poly/ENM communities. I would love the opportunity to assist you on your mental health journey in reaching your desired goals. Sliding scale fee available.

I take my work very seriously, which means that I strive to take myself very much not-seriously. Some sessions, you may need to cry. Some sessions you may need to laugh. This is a space for healing and growth. The most necessary ingredients for both of these things are warmth and play. My sessions can best be described as an abundance of warmth and play. I hold a Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from University of Pennsylvania, which I obtained with a focus on positive sexuality and living your best sexual self. I hold a Master of Arts (MA) in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Education (EdM) in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University, which I earned with a heavy emphasis on applying a social justice and multicultural lens to therapy. While at Columbia, I also received an Advanced Certificate in Sexuality, Women, and Gender with my focus on LGBTQQIA and open/polyamorous clients in therapy.

Have you experienced trauma that's left you feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed? Are you frustrated by finding yourself repeating the same patterns of behavior, even when those behaviors are no longer serving you? I create space for you to explore and learn new ways to cope with feelings of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and past traumas. I offer a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental approach to explore the issues coming up and learn new skills. We can work together to help you to better deal with the struggles you're facing, heal past wounds, and successfully shift the unfulfilling patterns and symptoms in your life. I draw heavily from cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic techniques, with an emphasis on both practical tools as well as attention to deeper emotions. I also intertwine elements of other modalities including mindfulness & meditation techniques. I also am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). No matter the concern, I use an individualized approach to help you in the unique way you need. I’d love to discuss how I can be of service and I offer free 30 minute phone consults so that you can explore what working together might look like and see if it feels like a good fit.

College is a time of enormous adjustments, especially for students who identify as LGBTQIA+. Alongside the pressures to be successful academically, there are numerous personal challenges to navigate in terms of sex and sexuality, relationships, identity, social communities, and drug and alcohol use. In my work with queer college students, we take the time to understand the unique challenges of this time for you in particular, and I work to cultivate your abilities to meet these challenges with resourcefulness and creativity. We also work to bring you into greater awareness of the unconscious features of your mind, in order to know yourself better and to resolve deep-rooted conflicts.

I am a compassionate, thoughtful, experienced psychologist, and I am very interested in getting to know you and your struggles. I work with individuals and couples, from late adolescence to older adulthood. My work is collaborative and starts by creating a non-judgmental space in which you can feel comfortable sharing your symptoms and exploring your past, present and future. We will work together to help you understand and negotiate the external and internal obstacles preventing you from achieving greater contentment in your life. I use evidence-based approaches, such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, to help clients reduce anxiety and depression, better cope with stress, and improve their self-esteem and relationships. I also utilize attachment and psychodynamic theories to help clients construct a meaningful narrative of their history, help identify harmful patterns in thinking, behavior and relationships, and help clients liberate from them. I specialize in both short-term and long-term psychotherapy aimed at increasing self-awareness and identifying patterns that contribute to mood symptoms and difficulties at work or in relationships. I look forward to speaking with you about the challenges you are currently facing so that we can establish a plan to help you overcome them and lead a more satisfying and fulfilling life. I look forward to learning about you and partnering with you through psychotherapy to help you reduce stress and find greater satisfaction with your life.

I am passionate about providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to individuals of all ages who are struggling with anxiety, depression, social challenges, fears, phobias, and OCD. I have worked to effectively adapt TEAM-CBT tools and techniques to help children and adolescents, while connecting with them in a way that is relatable and engaging. I also provide support to parents navigating the challenges of parenting. I have lived and worked on the Upper East Side with my family for over 6 years, so I understand the unique challenges and demands city families face. Therapy may feel like endless talking without any results or improvement in your life, but if you’re ready to work hard to meet your treatment goals, I use an approach to therapy that can give you the change you are looking for. Together we will create a treatment plan that reflects your goals, and the changes you want to see in your life. My approach to therapy is active, collaborative, and results driven. I provide my patients with concrete skills to overcome their anxiety, depression, and fears to help them get back to living a more satisfying, and enjoyable life. I push my patients to work hard to get better, so that they can achieve the results they desire. I try to develop a caring, collaborative, and supportive relationship with all my patients and their families. I strive to understand you and your family dynamics so that I can be the most effective therapist possible. Utilizing an evidence based, and highly effective approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, you will see noticeable change in your life within 8-10 sessions. I monitor symptoms at the beginning and end of every session so we know precisely how we are doing towards meeting your goals. As your comfort with utilizing these skills improves, you will learn how to cope with the challenges you face and soon feel ready to handle them on your own! While I hate saying good-bye to patients, it is very rewarding to end our therapy sessions knowing that our time together has provided my patients with the tools to be happier and more confident in their life.

I work with my clients on exploring underlying patterns, unresolved conflicts, and deep-seated emotional concerns that have been causing distress in their relationships with themselves and others. With authenticity and compassion, I work collaboratively with my clients through relationship and attachment issues, depression, anxiety, self-doubt, shame, loneliness, and childhood trauma, toward greater clarity and fulfillment. I foster a thoughtful space for navigating life transitions, complex family dynamics, questions of identity and purpose, as well as overall feelings of being stuck or lost. I understand that trust takes time and care to develop. Together, we’ll cultivate a relationship in which you can come to feel safe and free to express what’s troubling you. I’ll help you make better sense of what you’ve been struggling with and why, and support you in tuning into and working toward what well-being might look and feel like for you. Talking together with honesty and curiosity can deepen your understanding of yourself and your experiences and build resilience, which both support authentic, lasting growth. As this process unfolds, it can help you make changes that foster a more integrated sense of self, greater connection in relationships, and a stronger sense of meaning in life. Frances Huang, Wove Therapy
Clinical Social Work/Therapist
New York, NY

Frances is an autistic/neurodivergent, nonbinary and queer, disabled Taiwanese and Chinese immigrant. Frances works through an integrated person centered, trauma informed, relational, and feminist framework where they meet the client where they are at and co-designs the therapeutic space with clients to allow clients to be able to bring their whole selves in. They approach therapy from the fundamental belief that mental health symptoms are 1. responses to needs not being met and are indicators of larger systemic issues such as surviving under capitalism, living through the climate crisis, and resisting genocidal systems, and 2. differences that have been pathologized by a society that places a human’s worth on their productivity. A person's healing isn't linear and cannot be done in isolation without addressing these existing power structures and institutions. Therefore, Frances works from the perspective that mental health clinicians need to be advocates for systemic change, and is consistently advocating for mental health services to be more accessible for marginalized communities. Frances received their EdM and MA in Counseling Psychology at Teachers College Columbia University. Their previous training included working on an ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) team at the Bridge NY, where they were part of a mobile multidisciplinary treatment team that addressed clients who have fallen out of traditional mental healthcare and experience serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, etc. Frances also has a background of working in NY politics and advocacy at a social services nonprofit, where they mobilized AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander), low income, and immigrant communities to build political power.
