Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Hello! I assist BIPOC LGBTQ+ adults (18-40) to overcome anxiety, depression, shame, body image, grief, and trauma, among other challenges. While using various therapeutic techniques, I especially draw from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to meet your unique needs and goals. Together, we will explore how your past, present, and social environment impact your mental health. I have extensive experience working with BIPOC folx, those with intersectional identities, people from diverse sexual and gender experiences, sex workers, kink/fetish, BDSM, and poly/ENM communities. I would love the opportunity to assist you on your mental health journey in reaching your desired goals. Sliding scale fee available.
We believe that excellent therapy improves students lives in substantial, meaningful ways, which is what you should expect when you get started. We are a group of highly trained psychologists who love working with students to improve their lives and make changes.
I am a licensed psychologist specializing in anxiety and depression relating to areas such as relationships, multicultural (ie. race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality) identity, adolescent/young adult identity development, and adjusting to academic and career-related stress. I have a background working with both traditional and non-traditional college students within multiple capacities including as an academic advisor, first-generation student counselor, mentor, and adjunct professor. Outside of private practice, I work at Jacobi Medical Center Hospital providing trauma-focused treatment to individuals struggling with chronic medical conditions. Additionally, I am an CUNY adjunct assistant professor within both graduate school counseling/counselor education and undergraduate psychology departments.
I am passionate about providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to individuals of all ages who are struggling with anxiety, depression, social challenges, fears, phobias, and OCD. I have worked to effectively adapt TEAM-CBT tools and techniques to help children and adolescents, while connecting with them in a way that is relatable and engaging. I also provide support to parents navigating the challenges of parenting. I have lived and worked on the Upper East Side with my family for over 6 years, so I understand the unique challenges and demands city families face. Therapy may feel like endless talking without any results or improvement in your life, but if you’re ready to work hard to meet your treatment goals, I use an approach to therapy that can give you the change you are looking for. Together we will create a treatment plan that reflects your goals, and the changes you want to see in your life. My approach to therapy is active, collaborative, and results driven. I provide my patients with concrete skills to overcome their anxiety, depression, and fears to help them get back to living a more satisfying, and enjoyable life. I push my patients to work hard to get better, so that they can achieve the results they desire. I try to develop a caring, collaborative, and supportive relationship with all my patients and their families. I strive to understand you and your family dynamics so that I can be the most effective therapist possible. Utilizing an evidence based, and highly effective approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, you will see noticeable change in your life within 8-10 sessions. I monitor symptoms at the beginning and end of every session so we know precisely how we are doing towards meeting your goals. As your comfort with utilizing these skills improves, you will learn how to cope with the challenges you face and soon feel ready to handle them on your own! While I hate saying good-bye to patients, it is very rewarding to end our therapy sessions knowing that our time together has provided my patients with the tools to be happier and more confident in their life.

We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. Caryn (she/they) is a queer, nonbinary therapist who specializes in helping clients navigate anxiety, OCD, and sexual trauma (often the intersection of all three). Using approaches that honor the mind-body connection—such as psychosomatic therapy, IFS, and ERP—Caryn gently pushes clients to change unhelpful patterns and heal longstanding wounds. As an individual and couples’ therapist, Caryn creates a space in which clients can safely engage with the scary stuff without letting it overwhelm them. At the core of their practice is the belief that pleasure is a human right, and they are here to guide clients toward the joy that they deserve. I might be the right therapist for you if… You want to work with someone who Gets It: who understands the nuance of gender and sexuality, who understands your cultural references, and who sees the value in humor as a coping mechanism (aka, I’ll laugh at your jokes!) You want to stop intellectualizing your emotions and actually feel them (or, perhaps, feel them a little less intensely all the time) You keep getting caught in cycles of obsession and/or rumination and don’t know how to stop them or what they mean You want a therapist who is knowledgeable about and affirming of sex work, kink, polyamory, queer folks, neurodiversity, and fat liberation, among others
