I am an experienced licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. My goal and my passion is to work with my clients on whatever concerns they may have and to help them, with compassion and competence, make their lives more satisfying and fulfilling. I specialize in working with individuals, couples, families and groups going through life changes which may result in stress or anxiety including marriage/divorce/remarriage, relationship issues, parenting, personal development, aging and illness. I facilitate a THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT GROUP for divorced & divorcing women. The group provides therapeutic support as well as psychoeducation in a supportive and caring small group setting. The goal is to support and empower the women in the group and help them to optimally utilize their sometimes limited resources. In addition to my degree in marriage & family therapy I also have a law degree and have trained in mediation and collaborative law enabling me to help group members from a multitude of perspectives.

Education and Career I am a licensed psychologist and a founding co-owner of Avellar Warden Psychological Associates, PLLC. I intend to help clients address their attachment and developmental trauma, often at the root of anxiety, depression, and other challenges, using NARM (NeuroAffective Relational Model). Its heartfelt approach utilizes the shared human experience to support the client’s development and growth. . Within the modality’s framework, I create a collaborative environment where clients can reconnect to their heart’s desire as we address internal obstacles. In our exploration, the client finds healthier ways of relating to their self and environment.
You are not broken — you are human. And being human means facing change, pressure, and uncertainty — things that can feel especially heavy during college. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed, questioning who you are or what’s next, or trying to balance school, family, and your own expectations. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Therapy can be a space to pause, reflect, and begin again — with support and intention. In our sessions, you’ll find a warm, understanding space where you can show up just as you are — no need to have it all together. My role isn’t to fix you, but to walk beside you. Together, we’ll explore what’s been weighing on you, reconnect you with your strengths, and find new ways forward that feel true to who you are. Every student’s story is different. That’s why I don’t believe in one “right” way to do therapy. Our work will be shaped by your needs, your culture, and your goals. Whether you’re coping with stress, adjusting to college life, dealing with family or relationship challenges, or trying to rediscover your sense of purpose, we’ll move at your pace. A big part of our work will be exploring three things: WHY – Why are you seeking change? PURPOSE – What gives your life meaning? PRIORITIES – What matters most to you right now? When we understand your why, purpose, and priorities, therapy becomes more than just talking — it becomes growth. Wherever you are in your process, you don’t have to walk it alone. I’m here to meet you where you are and support you as you find your way forward.
Our Mission Statement: An Innovative Approach to Therapy Here at Tompkins Community Counseling, we tailor to your needs and will work in the environment that is best for you. Our goal is to provide you with professional, client-led, goal-based counseling, while working in whatever setting is most comfortable for you— in the community, online, or in our office. We understand how difficult it can be to ask for help and discuss your life challenges, so we try to make the journey as comfortable as possible for you. Simply put, we achieve this by following your lead throughout the counseling process. We use a Client-Led Counseling model, finding strengths that you already have and building on them to reach resolutions. We follow the pace of our clients to help them achieve control over their lives, helping them make positive choices by offering them specific tools and practical strategies for change. We also practice a wide variety of treatment models and support you in choosing one that is a good fit for you. We will help you to define your long term goals, allowing our sessions to be driven by focused goals that will lead to a successful discharge.
College life can be exciting and fulfilling, but also may be daunting and overwhelming at times. Maintaining grades in school, navigating relationships and exploring new experiences may be a lot to do all on your own. My passion lies in helping people adjust to life transitions, and in healing from trauma. Learning what you bring to relationships due to your own upbringing and earlier experiences will help you to be more intentional in your current interactions. I also care about helping people heal what perpetuates their substance use, while working to gain coping skills, and plan for a life of recovery.
Do you sometimes feel stuck in parts of your life? Do you notice the same problems keep happening in your relationships or career? Therapy provides a space to examine how you perceive yourself and the world. It also helps with discussing and processing difficult and painful feelings. These feelings provide new insight into ways to grow and change. My approach to therapy is based on ingredients proven to help, such as a good connection with your therapist and feeling understood and supported. I'm a graduate of Duke University; I completed my doctorate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester. Most recently, I was a generalist at Cornell Health, where I focused on interdisciplinary clinical care. I specialize in anxiety, stress, and compulsive habits people develop to cope with them. I know it takes a lot of strength and courage to start this process, and I respect that. We'll schedule our first session during your initial consultation. We'll discuss your current concerns and mental health history in the first session and develop a plan of care that feels right to you. Please visit my webpage to schedule a consultation.

Although I specialize in Anxiety, OCD & Phobias, I also practice EMDR for trauma, as well as offering support around the full spectrum of issues including identity, relationships, depression, and issues around grief & loss. I hope that by coming to therapy with me, you are offered a warm and comforting environment where we can look together at issues without judgment. I will try to offer you perspective and what wisdom I've gained over the years to help your life at Cornell be what you'd like it to be. I look forward to hearing from you.
