I also have expertise in working with all manner of questions related to sexuality, gender, and relationships of all kinds. In working with me, you can expect to find an attentive listener who will help you gain insight and work toward more effective coping strategies. Hi! If you’re seeking out therapy, then it’s likely you’re a little nervous. If so, take a deep breath! I’m here to create a space where you feel safe and supported as you share your personal story. In therapy we will focus on practical skills for addressing your symptoms and explore how your story of self has been shaped by both current and past relationships. I enjoy working with emerging adults, adolescents, and anyone eager to build a “life worth living.” I believe that in healing there is room for humor. And that my authenticity allows us to do great work together. When I’m not working I love going to the dog park and watching reality tv. If you’re interested, please reach out and we can schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if we’re a good fit!
Elyse Schunkewitz, LCSW is a holistic psychotherapist and brain-based coach/personal trainer. She helps clients rewire their nervous system while improving their mind-body connection. Through a collaborative approach, clients develop strong and healthy habits and mindset and learn how to feel in control of their own bodies. Elyse tends to see clients who are looking for something different from more traditional psychotherapy, may have "tried everything" and are still struggling, or are high performers, athletes, or actors and want to take their achievements to the next level. She works with a variety of issues including chronic pain, eating disorders, post concussion syndrome, anxiety, depression, executive functioning concerns, and more. Clients walk away from therapy with Elyse with noticeable improvements in how they move, feel, and perform both physically and mentally.
At AVI MIND, we believe in helping people lead happy, healthy lives. Our providers focus on you and strive to be partners in your care. I work with clients who experience trauma, whether it is childhood sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, or more recent traumatic events. You might wish to forget about it by not talking about it, but it often comes back and “haunts” you. The best way to deal with a “ghost” is to talk about it and take away its power over you. It is normal that you want to avoid it. However, the worst part of Trauma is that it continues. I would like to help you work through it, separate the past from the present so you can move on with your life. I am also very much interested in working on Women’s Issues, life transitions, anxiety, and depression. You might feel compelled to behave in certain ways, and you don't understand your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Together, we will explore what works for you and what doesn’t by listening and seeking understanding. I will help reflect on any parts you did not understand before. With more information about yourself, you will be able to make better choices. I partner with teens and adults to navigate the complexities of trauma, intimate partner violence, and self-harm. Together, we work to understand fear, anger, shame, guilt, and envy, these difficult and painful emotions, rebuild your self-esteem, and cultivate a sense of resilience. I am licensed in New York and New Jersey and offer both online therapy and in-person sessions at my office located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I am fluent in both English and Mandarin
You scroll through social media—past the highlights of trips, engagement announcements, and large friends/family gatherings—that familiar ache settles in your chest. You’ve been hurt, and it’s affected your ability to form healthy connections where you feel safe, seen, heard, and validated. Opening up—being vulnerable—feels like a struggle, and you know it’s keeping you stuck and alone. It’s not that you haven’t tried. You’ve been open, set boundaries, and “put yourself out there”. You’ve invested time, energy, and effort into making your relationships work. Yet you're feeling stuck, frustrated, wondering where I'm going wrong. I work with individuals in New York who want to break old relationship patterns and build connections that actually feel good. My warm, collaborative style blends solution-focused, psychodynamic, and person-centered approaches. I offer affirming care for LGBTQIA+ clients and those in non-traditional relationships. Healing from relationship pain takes courage and care—and you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you’re single, dating, in a situationship, or exploring polyamory, we’ll move forward with curiosity, not judgment. If you’re ready to stop repeating patterns and start building relationships that feel safe and supportive, I’d be honored to work with you.
Welcome. If you’re here, I imagine you may be feeling stuck or uncertain about how to move forward in your life. I would like to help you take the next steps. In our work together, we will find ways for you to more meaningfully connect with yourself and with those who are important to you. This work may include facing something from your past, gaining new awareness of repetitive cycles of behavior, navigating a difficult life transition, or the opportunity to freely discover and playfully explore your own subjectivity and imagination. I also work with couples to improve their communication by identifying the ways in which they get stuck trying to resolve conflict, while also finding ways to achieve greater emotional intimacy. My areas of focus include: depression (particularly with men), anxiety, life transitions, identity development, artistic stress, bereavement, trauma, and interpersonal difficulties. My approach is collaborative, active, warm, and transparent. Having worked as an actor previously, I am also particularly aware of the impact of the body on our wellbeing, the nuances of the creative process, and of the various (and often contradictory) roles we play in our relationships. Integrating this perspective in my practice has benefited my work with creatives and non-creatives alike. My practice is primarily psychodynamic; I begin with the assumption that people develop certain patterns of interacting with others in childhood, and that these patterns are repeated throughout life. I use the therapeutic relationship in order to help clarify these conscious and unconscious patterns of relating. If you think we may be a good fit together, please reach out to schedule a free phone consultation. I can be reached at dralexseife@gmail.com

Is it just me, or do a lot of these "bios" start to sound the same after a while? Finding a therapist online is difficult, which I know from personal experience. I am here to provide connections, help facilitate joy and offer a space for you to learn to express your needs and be supported. Our practice together will value your lived experiences as the primary material and will be co-created through empathy and open communication. These systems of mental health are not ones that want us to "feel better", thanks to capitalism and systemic racism. I want to offer a space to fight against that. I have experience working with "high-risk" (read, traumatized and hurt) people living with mental illnesses and difficult experiences. I am comfortable working with what is often labeled as the more "severe" diagnoses and I focus of finding the health in every individual. I am a New York State licensed creative arts therapist and a board certified dance/movement therapist. This helps me in finding creative and expressive ways to connect in therapy spaces for all different types of people. I believe we can all benefit from some extra support lately! Contact me for a free consult to see if working together will be a good fit.
I believe that we all possess the power to make lasting changes in our lives. We just need the right support. I take a holistic attitude to understanding the challenges my clients face, including paying attention to the importance of culture and environment. I believe that change occurs when we acknowledge intersectionality, the complexity of identity, and the important roles that social systems like family, religion, culture, class, gender, and race play in people’s lives, not when we ignore the broader picture and focus only on the individual. My goal is to walk with you on your journey and provide compassionate and collaborative guidance that fits exactly who you are while helping you move towards how you want to be in the world. I work with people dealing with a whole variety of mental health and mental wellness concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, spirituality, career and personal development, grief and loss, and life transitions. I have a special love for providing counseling to international students, immigrants, and refugees. Want to get started? Email me.

I am a native Spanish speaker and identify as Hispanic/Latina. My therapeutic philosophy is grounded in teamwork and following your pace in the therapy room, whether we meet online or in the office, as we explore the stress and pain that brings you to therapy. I appreciate your bravery in seeking the support you deserve. Do not hesitate to reach out via email, call or text. I look forward to hearing from you!

You deserve to live a life with more joy, ease and confidence. Therapy doesn't have to be a one-sided relationship where you're mulling over your entire life's history and all of the pain! In fact, it can be an enjoyable process; a full, engaging relationship with humor, intellect, creativity, spark and curiosity. I'm a real person in the room with you. Together, we will explore solutions and new ways of thinking, feeling and acting. You and I can experiment in sessions to tap into resources or to find new tools to unburden you from emotional pain, whether that be with mindfulness, cognitive, somatic or creative techniques. With 15+ years of experience, many clients have reported positive changes from our work, including less anxiety, more awareness and clarity and healthier relationships. I also specialize working with ACoAs & Codependency. My first job in the field was working at a college counseling center so I'm also very familiar with working with the 18+ crowd and all of the hassles that can come with college living, relationships and school.
Starting college is a major transition, and it can bring a mix of excitement, pressure, stress, and uncertainty. Together, we focus on helping you feel more grounded, more connected, and better able to navigate both your inner world and your relationships. I am also licensed to provide comprehensive in-person testing. This may be for your personal understanding of yourself or it could be to support applications for accommodations for academic work at your college or for standardized testing (e.g. GRE, LSAT, MCAT etc).

We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.
