Therapists for college students near Durham, NC
My name is Kristen and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker offering telehealth therapy for teens and young adults in Ohio, North Carolina, and Michigan struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, or school issues. Together we will work together to achieve the goals you've set for yourself through honest dialogue, empathetic understanding, and maybe even a little laughter. Thank you for considering me in your journey! Let's get started.
You’re used to keeping it together, even when it’s hard. Maybe you're the overthinker, the perfectionist, the one who’s always there for everyone else. But lately, it’s been a lot: anxiety, life changes, big questions about who you are and where you’re headed. Therapy can be a place to slow down, feel understood, and find tools that actually help. I work with teens and young adults navigating anxiety, depression, identity, and life transitions. My style is warm, supportive, and grounded in trauma-informed CBT. Together, we’ll get curious about what’s going on beneath the surface and build skills to help you move forward. When you are ready to talk, call Gracefully Balanced Counseling at our office number or shoot me an email. We can schedule your free 15 minute consultation, where you can learn more about my approach and if we would make a good fit!

I enjoy working with neurodivergent children, teens, adults, and families, including those with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other disabilities. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or struggling with emotional regulation, relationships, school, or daily life demands. Together, we create a neuroaffirming space where clients can better understand themselves, build on their strengths, develop practical coping skills, and find approaches that honor the way their brains naturally work. As an art therapist and former elementary school art teacher, I offer a creative, person-centered approach tailored to each client's needs. I incorporate art therapy, sandtray therapy, play therapy, DBT, CBT, and solution-focused techniques to support emotional growth, self-understanding, and meaningful change. I believe healing happens when people are given space to show up as they are. You don't need artistic experience, perfect words, or everything figured out to begin therapy. If you're looking for a compassionate, collaborative space to explore challenges and strengths, I'd be honored to support you.
Giving up is not the answer. When you’ve tried every solution but nothing has worked, life can start to seem hopeless. You can lose yourself and forget your own strength, but life is too short to stay stuck in the suck. Discover the life you’ve always wanted with Mathews Counseling. Find the confidence to overcome life’s challenges. Get practical tools to help you thrive in life. Feel more connected to yourself and to others.
Therapy is not always easy. But that doesn't mean it is without joy. In therapy, we get to come to an appreciation of both joy and sorrow that are the consequences of living a fully human life. Through appropriate challenge and support, we are able to expand the range of our humanity and our participation in the world. My approach is grounded in brief psychodynamic models of treatment. I believe that therapy can help make us conscious of the adjustments we have made to cope with our life circumstances and can shine a light on new possibilities towards greater authenticity. I continually seek to improve my own utility as a therapist, and I read voraciously towards that end. My understanding of psychology, sociology, and social work provide not only a foundation for understanding client struggles, but also a basis from which to conceptualize growth and solutions.
Experience: Ebube (pronounced aye-boo-bay) is a warm, empathetic therapist who is passionate about supporting children, adolescents, and families through a trauma-informed, equity-centered lens. She holds a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Social Work from Appalachian State University, graduating magna cum laude. Her clinical approach is rooted in direct practice with a strong foundation in social justice, restorative practices, and holistic mental health care. With experience across school systems, outpatient mental health, and community-based programs, Ebube is especially committed to creating safe, healing-centered spaces for young people and families navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and identity development. She has received specialized training through UNC PrimeCare 4 Youth in integrated behavioral health care for children and adolescents, and has completed certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). She is currently completing training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to further support clients in developing emotional regulation, mindfulness, and effective coping skills. Her professional values are deeply informed by racial equity and restorative practices, with additional training through Organizing Against Racism (OAR) and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. These frameworks guide her in honoring each client’s lived experience and in fostering respectful, culturally responsive relationships. Whether you’re seeking therapy for yourself, your child, Ebube provides a collaborative, nonjudgmental environment where healing and growth can take root. I see therapy as a collaborative effort between myself and my clients. As a queer black woman, my goal is to provide space for those like me and others who have felt silenced and marginalized a majority of their lives. I have a passion for working with women of color and LGBTQIA+ identifying folks. If you find yourself experiencing things like depression and anxiety, or low self-esteem/self-concept, I may be a good fit for you. I have past experience working with clients on things like life adjustments (moving, end of a relationship, career change, etc.), grief and loss, day-to-day stressors, and relationship concerns - romantic, platonic, familial, and professional.
I understand that reaching out for support is a big step, often taken while overwhelmed by difficult emotions. Many of my clients come to me feeling exhausted, whether it manifests as persistent worry, disconnection from loved ones, or low self-esteem. You might feel stuck, sensing that something’s off, even if you can't pinpoint exactly what it is. These feelings are common, and you are not alone. I often work with clients processing past trauma, seeking greater self-awareness, and coping with ongoing stress. My goal is to meet you where you are and support you in forging deeper connections with yourself, others, and the world.
