Hi! Please, don't let my name scare you- I am not *that* kind of Karen. Are you struggling with worry, lack of motivation, inability to sleep, feeling disconnected from friends and/or family? I work with people, such as this, who may have anxiety, depression, PTSD, women's issues, attachment and identity concerns. As an adoption competent therapist, I also work with adult adoptees to navigate post- adoption experiences that arise and impact our life (self- included!). We will untangle your issues together so you learn how to cope more effectively. My approach is relaxed, not stuffy, and I tend to swear a lot, full disclosure. Everyone deserves mental health care so please contact me!

My hope for my clients is that they leave sessions feeling empowered and confident in their own choices, intuition, and feelings.

I am a Harvard-trained, Harvard-affiliated, board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist. I strongly believe that the best psychiatric care is centered on the whole person, not just on a diagnosis or a specific medication. I provide weekly therapy and work with patients to determine if medications can be of help. I do not believe that everyone needs a medication, but they can be useful in treating particular psychiatric symptoms; I will work with you in order to find the best treatment modality that meets your goals and needs. My training in psychotherapy includes psychodynamic psychotherapy, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Exposure/Response Prevention (Ex/RP) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). I provide psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. In order to offer comprehensive treatment, I do not accept insurance in my private practice. I am currently conducting sessions via telemedicine only. Please feel free to send me an email to set up a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation so I can answer any questions and see if I can be of help.

*Telehealth video sessions only* Healing from difficult life experiences can and does happen. We are all wired to protect ourselves from experiencing pain, but unfortunately the parts of ourselves that work hard to distance us from pain often keep us from living fully. If you are noticing patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are getting in the way of your moving forward in the direction of your dreams, this is a great start. The work of therapy is to slow down in order to cultivate the space between you and your feelings so that you are less overwhelmed, more understanding and have greater self compassion. You are not your feelings. Whether you suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, or are having conflict in relationships or difficulty adjusting to new experiences, I believe that you have the capacity and strength to overcome obstacles and live life to your fullest potential. With a calm and caring presence and over 25 years of experience, I would be privileged to work with you so that you can experience freedom from self-limiting beliefs and live with greater intention, self- acceptance, interpersonal effectiveness and joy. Therapy doesn't have to be painful or overwhelming. I will work collaboratively with you to pace the work so that you can maintain a sense of safety and stability throughout the process. I use a number of different therapeutic modalities but believe that goodness of fit in the therapeutic relationship is the foundation of success. I am happy to speak with you to help figure out if I would be a good match for you.

I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to process memories, thoughts and feelings. There are long, lost fears and often past traumas at play in all of us. Some surface, wreaking havoc with our lives. They can appear as grief, depression, anxiety or crisis. Others remain dormant and can surface at all the wrong times. You may appear successful, but despite your accomplishments, you are not happy or it seems like others are happier than you. Your personal relationships are not satisfying in the way you expect. Why is happiness still elusive? We can dislodge what is blocking your best life and guide you to a healthier self. We will guide you to new understandings, new behaviors and new ways of being that will lead you to a happier self. You can reduce the anxiety and depression. You can disarm the trauma and grief that has made the days so uncomfortable. I provide a safe, empathetic environment for change. Call to book an appointment or consultation.

I specialize in working with anxiety disorders, self-esteem, and personality disorders; I also have the unique niche of working researchers/academics as well as those who have lived abroad. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School, University of Pennsylvania, and as a Fulbright scholar in Budapest, Hungary, studying psychotherapeutic interventions for anxiety disorders and personality disorders. My work has resulted in 20+ publications in research journals and popular science magazines. Having lived in Europe for several years, I deeply understand bi-cultural and cross-cultural challenges. My background as an academic researcher also has shaped my approach, allowing me to connect with and support clients from diverse backgrounds in a meaningful way! Hey Hey Hey! I’m Lenora Benson (She/Her/Hers), LICSW and I support black and ethnic minority women, in navigating the challenges and expectations imposed on them by the fallacy of the strong black women. I support all women in navigating the social expectations, stressors, and demands of being woman, as they intersect in all areas of racism, sexism, and patriarchism. I believe in the transformative power of therapy, because it has transformed me personally. As your therapist, I provide a safe, supportive, and judgement free space for you to explore your emotions, heal from past wounds, and journey from darkness to the light. My goals are to help those struggling with low self-esteem, people pleasing tendencies, and high-achieving perfectionism, dismantle the beliefs that keeps them stuck in patterns of behavior that leave them feeling like imposters; never good enough, never smart enough. Working with me will allow you to begin to make decisions for yourself that leave you feeling loved, worthy, and empowered.
