I offer straightforward help with anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. It starts by developing a holistic understanding of your situation and history. With that shared perspective, we'll work together to find the best way to resolve your current challenges. Our work together may involve finding a kinder way of relating to yourself and more effective ways of connecting with others and getting their support. If it requires developing new skills, I offer help through mindfulness, breathing practices, biofeedback, relaxation, and thought management. I'm confident that by learning to think and act differently, and addressing obstacles to change, you will gain more control over your life and start feeling better.
Welcome! My goal as your therapist is to meet you exactly where you are and help you get where you want to go. I do this by collaborating with you to develop an individualized and holistic plan tailored to your unique experiences and goals. I draw from EMDR, Narrative Therapy, Feminist Therapy, CBT and other integrative approaches. I consider my therapeutic style to be warm, empowering, open-minded, and honest. I enjoy working with adults living in California, including fellow members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Thanks for stopping by and investing in yourself today. I can't wait to meet you!
Many people experience adversity, wondering what happened in their life. They may have difficulty navigating relationships, question their gender identity, or feel under pressure at school or work, unsure of how to make it through the day. Moments like these can be overwhelming, but with guidance and support, many can not only survive but flourish. I teach clients skills to better tackle daily challenges. My experience working with LGBTQ+ youth and young adults prepared me to help clients overcome adversity and live authentically. My goal is to help clients challenge unhelpful thoughts that wear them down and promote problem-solving. I hope to empower clients to grow and even inspire others to grow.
I currently have limited availability; please reach out to inquire of openings (as of 06/17/2026). Growing up Asian American in San Francisco, I had the privilege of feeling like “the majority” rather than feeling like “the minority.” When my mental health took a turn in my teen years, I was fortunate to have an Asian school-based therapist who reminded me of a “cool Asian aunt.” I remember feeling at ease seeing someone who looked like me in a space I thought was only meant for white people or people who were “that crazy.” This therapist showed me that therapy could be warm, kind, and even involve the humor I needed to say the hard stuff. She showed me that people like us could receive support and care through a listening ear. (I thought the only kind of care Asian elders gave was via cut fruit.) Years later, I hope to share this same safe experience as the person now sitting in the therapist’s chair. Whether you are living out your parents’ dreams or just trying to make it through the week, I can help you explore whether your path aligns with your values and supports your growth. I promise I won’t sass you the way my former Asian auntie-like therapist might, but I’ll make sure we keep it light where it needs to be, and hold space where it’s dark. We will discover who you are and what you need, with the utmost care (and a dash of humor, because therapy is hard enough as it is).
I specialize in supporting LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC college students through life’s challenges. Whether you're navigating academic pressures, adjusting to life away from home, or exploring your identity, I’m here to help. My practice is inclusive of all experiences, with a focus on working with LGBTQIA+ individuals, first and second-generation immigrants, and neurodivergent students. Together, we’ll create a space where you can feel understood and empowered. Life can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. I am currently a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (#143062) under the supervision of Kameryn Rose LMFT #119932. Recognizing the need for help is challenging enough; finding the right and best clinician should be simple and straightforward. Below you will find a brief discussion of my techniques, experience and central therapeutic tenets. My name is Dr. R. Austin Heafey – I am a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents and families, to provide both support and treatment for a wide range of social, domestic, personal and psychological concerns. Regardless of who I am working with, my primary focus is on improving self-esteem, building self-confidence and working to enrich my patients self-worth. The more faith a person has in their own abilities and innate uniqueness, the more they are able to engage with the world they live in, the family they were belong to and the life they deserve to experience. Put simply, I aim to improve my patients quality of life.
When people ask me what my ideal client I actually wonder what's people's ideal therapists? I think this is important when thinking about an ideal client and therapists because I see it as a collaborative work. I'm not here to force you what I think is best for you, therapy is something both the client and therapist figure out together to meet the clients' needs and goals. I find it important to keep in mind intersectionalities and how society and culture play an important role. I enjoy working with different diversities such as LGBTQ+, culture, and etc. I also work with trauma using informal exposure, art therapy, teen therapy, and couples therapy. I also love doing work involving aspects of DBT therapy such as mindfulness. I know the therapy process is hard, but I want to try to make anyone feel they can be themselves (sometimes I use humor when appropriate). Searching for the right therapist is hard so whether it's me or not I encourage you to keep looking and find who's right for you out there. Feel free to reach out for a phone consult or email!

The Brown Therapy Center clinicians are a professional and experienced group of psychotherapists who come from a diverse range of educational backgrounds and specialties. As seasoned guides and intentional listeners, we aim to meet you where you are on your journey, providing insight and facilitating healing along the way and tailoring our treatment methods to meet the unique needs of each client. Though we draw from the traditional psychoanalytic frameworks including the work of C.G. Jung, we aim to take an integrative approach to counseling that incorporates elements of philosophy, spirituality, and perspectives from across cultures. In addition to more holistic models, our clinicians are highly versed in scientifically validated approaches, various somatic modalities, and psychedelic integration.
I have a passion for working with people who want to live more fulfilling lives with a more genuine connection to themselves and others. My clients feel more empowered in their actions and relationships instead of letting their unhelpful thoughts and behaviors take over, while growing a more accepting and compassionate perspective towards themselves. It’s always a good session when my clients feel challenged and motivated to work towards their goals between sessions. I believe that much of the therapy work is completed between sessions just as much as it is in the hour minutes we will spend together each week. As a therapist, I’m not afraid of bearing witness to your pain and fear while finding ways to recognize joy and hope. I truly believe in each of my clients’ ability to grow and change. As an Exposure-based therapist, I’ll encourage you to take steps to approach your fears and reclaim your life. As a woman of color, I am sensitive to the ways that identity and mental health intersect and impact each other. I take an action-oriented and direct approach. Therapy is an investment in YOU, and I value all that my clients put into this work. I aim to “work myself out of a job” with each client, because I know that the goal isn’t to stay in treatment forever– it’s to live happier and healthier lives.
***Currently serving individuals in California and Oregon*** Hello! My name is Carlota, and I am a social justice advocate; a believer in science; a fierce and overly-obsessed dog mom to two wacky pups; an immigrant; and steadfast in my conviction that we have a fundamental obligation to help one another if we have the means and capacity to do so. I completed my undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley in 2008, and received my Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2013 from the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.
